3 of My Favorite Traditional Irish Foods

Ireland has a lot of different foods to offer, many including potatoes. Arguably potatoes are the best part of every stew and the superior side dish but that's another conversation. However, around holidays such as Easter, St Patrick's Day, and even Christmas, many Irish and Irish-American families indulge in these foods.                                                                                                                   ~ Number One : Soda Bread                                                                                                                        A traditional Irish soda bread was made when milk went sour, since the acid would react with the base of the baking soda. In my family, my mother usually bakes some around St. Patrick's day to eat along side corned-beef and cabbage. It traditionally doesn't include raisins, but my mom adds them. A perfectly traditional soda bread only has flour, baking soda, buttermilk, and salt. The idea of the soda bread is said to come from American indigenous tribes that used soda ash in their bread.

~ Number Two: Corned Beef and Cabbage                                                                                                 Any Irish person you meet most likely has had this dish. The corned beef cooks with a variety of pickling spices such as allspice, mustard seed, coriander, pepper, cinnamon, cloves, ginger, dill seed, and any other spices you would like. The cabbage soaks up all the juices from the meat. This is usually eaten on holidays, specifically St. Patrick's Day. It can also be cooked in a instant pot or something of that sort. Potatoes and carrots
may also be added for flavor. Personally, I like the beef because it is tender and juicy, but I do not like cabbage at all.

It's rather crumbly and not your usual icing and sprinkles cake. It's more of a tea cake and it's good to eat with applesauce or jam. Raisins are usually added. Traditionally, this cake is made in a bundt pan, but my family usually makes it in a square cake pan. This cake is also very popular for baptisms. The whiskey is cooked out, but it still leaves the flavor. Some people pour whiskey on top or soak the cake in it. I don't do that obviously because in America that is very much illegal.

  1. Traditional Irish food is very diverse, much like Italian food. I thought that the traditional dishes were very interesting as to how individuals customize the dishes to their liking. Italians also slightly change some of their ingredients.
